There is one more thing related to basements for those lucky enough to have a home with central air and a basement. I had a modification to my furnace done that effectively adds a separate return air duct, which pulls in the cold air from my basement and mixes that with the air from the return duct upstairs. This evens out the temperatures in my home, and winds up with my AC running less since the home is keeping cool naturally. The company that installed it, Powerzoning, has a good explanation online about using air stratification to cool your home.
